These selected pages of the manuscript journal describe Liancourt's visit to Virginia in 1796 and his account of his stay at Monticello where he met Thomas Jefferson. These pages contain Liancourt's detailed description of life in Virginia during the federalist period. Liancourt's journal describes Virginia society - its economy, social relations, and religious practices - in considerable detail. He was particularly interested in patterns of land ownership and agricultural technology.
